TEMPORARY VISAS
Australia's
temporary residence program is designed to allow overseas people to come to Australia
for specific purposes which result in some benefit to Australia. The program
consists of three streams:
·
Economic;
·
Social/Cultural; and
·
International relations.
Temporary
residents are required to pay taxes on income earned in Australia. They do not
have access to social welfare benefits or national public health cover (with
some exceptions). Included in the criteria to be met in all of the temporary
resident visa classes is that applicants must be assessed as satisfying
Australia's strict good health and character requirements.
THE
ECONOMIC STREAM
Business
Entry Visas
The
Business Entry Visas allow employers to overcome temporary skilled labour
shortages by recruiting key personnel from overseas, or for genuine business
people who make short trips for legitimate business reasons or longer stay for
establishing a business in Australia. For employers, labour market testing may
be required to establish that the required skills are not readily available in
Australia.
Educational
Visas
Educational
Visas allow educational and research institutions or organizations to fill
academic, teaching and research positions which they have been unable to fill
from the Australian labour market. This category includes overseas students who are
enrolled in Australian educational institutions for short-term or long-term
studies. Students visas are subjected to some control as there have been
instances of students overstaying their visas. New policies are now in place, which are quite
involved, for people who want to study in Australia. Different requirements are
needed for different countries based on the level of risk from historical data.

Medical
Practitioner Visas
Suitably qualified
medical practitioners from overseas who satisfy labour market requirements.
Consistent with Government intentions in reforming practitioners access to
Medicare bulk billing, visa grants in this class are expected to decrease. Visa
grants to medical practitioners will have a much greater focus on providing
service to rural and remote communities.
